Solomon Plotsky wasn’t a trend setter, a person of great renown or any type of what might be called a celebrity. What he was can be categorized as a fine human being and a hero. His heroism is evidenced by the citation issued in awarding him the Silver Star medal for gallantry in action, near Lutrebois, Belgium, January 4, 1945. He modestly claims that the Silver Star was awarded to him because he was Jewish. Stating further he explained that since his dog tags listed him as “Jewish” and he was scared to death of what the enemy would do to him if he was captured, he fought like a mad man. In an attempt to regain American lines during the Battle of the Bulge, he single handedly wrestled a machine gun from an enemy gunner allowing his group to regain contact with the remainder of the battalion. During the course of his military career he was also awarded the Bronze Star and Purple Heart. After the war, Solomon worked as a manager of the residential division of Breslin Realty and volunteered at the Veterans Hospital at Northport were he was known for his gracious hospitality. To some he could be seen as “…a 19th century gentleman…the Sir Walter Raleigh who would put his cape across the mud puddle to keep the delicate young lady from soiling her feet… he was the one who would open doors and offer his seat to the elderly, ever mindful of the feelings and needs of others…”
