Julius Klein, 1947-1948. A prominent Chicago Jew. In the midst of political tension both in the Middle East and among American Jews, PNC Klein brought dynamic leadership to JWV. During the war he had been Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhowers Public Affairs aide and through this prestigious position had developed many influential friends. Klein organized a large rally in support of Israel, held in New York City on April 4, 1948, one month before Israel declared her independence. Klein, a conservative, cared deeply for the Jewish War Veterans, even going so far as to resign his membership when his own controversial ideas opposed JWVs, and most of the countrys, so as not to cause the organization any embarassment. Upon his death, Klein left all of his valuable military memorabilia to JWV. In his honor, JWV created the General Julius Klein Gallery in the National Museum of American Jewish Military History.
