Alexander Fleischmann was born, January 12, 1919, in Bronx, N.Y. He was killed in action, August 8, 1944, at the Battle of St. Lo, France. He served on the half-track with General Patton's 802nd Tank Destroyer battalion. He lost his life exiting a fox hole to warn his buddies as a group of German soldiers exited the forest, surrender fashion. The forward soldiers lay down; those behind them opened fire on our boys. Al attended Theodore Roosevelt HS, a four letter man, captain of the football team, played tackle, place kicker; voted All-Scholastic NYC. Played football for LIU, the NY Giants short lived 1941 football team. Al coached football at CCNY, working toward a solid coaching career. The war broke out and he was called to serve. The Alex Fleischmann, Horowitz, Col. Marcus Jewish War Veterans Post #6 was originally named after Al alone. Survived by his sister, Rita Fleischmann Price, he's my hero.
