Rachel Rosen Lehmann was born in 1903 in New York City where she lived until moving to Miami Beach in 1930. During World War II she carried the rank of Sergeant with the United States Women's Army Corps and was stationed at Fort Dix, New Jersey from 1943 to 1946. Her military service continued beyond 1946 remaining active through numerous engagements including Chairman of the ROTC Program of the Jewish War Veterans, Chairperson for the Junior ROTC in Atlanta, and Vice Commander of the Atlanta Post 112 of the Jewish War Veterans. While living in Miami she owned a beach wear shop and a children's clothing store. In 1978 Rachel moved to Atlanta, Georgia, to care for her terminally ill sister. While making Atlanta her new home, she launched a long and remarkable career of dedicated involvement with Atlanta arts organizations and community. For almost 30 years she was a full-time volunteer for the Atlanta Opera as audition and special events coordinator, special assistant to the artistic director, and, when needed, as a walk-on performer. She also volunteered with the Friends of the Fox Theatre (the prestigious volunteer of the year award) from Opera America for her work on behalf of the historic venue. Rachel received numerous awards for her distinguished service, volunteerism, public service and humanitarian service to her Atlanta communities. Rachel's most cherished endeavor was watching and participating in her family's successes in life. She remained very close and connected to her family - nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. She traveled all over the world to be with them. Rachel passed away May 28, 2009 (three days before her 106th birthday) at Williams Breman Jewish Home (Atlanta), surrounded by her family.
