Seymour Kaitz was born in Boston, Mass., on May 6, 1928, and grew up in the Dorchester section of the city. He graduated from Boston University in 1951 with a major in education.
Serving in Korea in U.S. Army Infantry Regiment 2230 from October 1951-August 1953, he was awarded the Korean Service Medal with two bronze stars, a U.N. Service Medal, and a Combat Infantry Badge. While in Korea, he edited "Password", a weekly newspaper. He was awarded a special citation for his extraordinary efforts to get the paper out regularly, contributing to the morale of his regiment.
After his discharge, Seymour went back to B.U. to obtain a Master's Degree in education. At this time he met Carolyn. After a happy nine-month courtship, Sy and Carolyn decided to have their parents get together to discuss wedding plans. The meeting did not turn out well, and Sy and Carolyn went their separate ways, eventually marrying others.
In 1959, Sy moved to take a teaching position in Plainview, NY. In 1963, Carolyn also moved to NY, to a teaching position in Centereach. They met at a shopping center, having not seen or heard from each other for 25 years. They married and had 28 happy years together.
Sy enjoyed spending time in the outdoors, making his home look like a park with beautiful trees and flowers. He loved spending time with children, grandchildren, and with coin and stamp collections. He was active in the Jewish War Veterans, serving as one of its commanders.
After a healthy life, with no illness, Sy succumbed to pancreatic cancer in December 2008 at age 80.
