Morris (Murray) Shindler was born on September 16, 1896 in Lawrence, Massachusetts, the third child and first son of Hyman and Lottie Shindler. The family, which was composed eventually of eight children, moved to Rhode Island, where Murray graduated from Cranston High School. Murray registered for service in the Navy during World War I. Although the Navy initially rejected him because he did not meet its height and weight requirements, he persisted in his efforts to join. On July 3 1918 he enrolled as Mess Attendant 2nd Class. On August 21, 1918 he reported for duty aboard the USS George G. Henry, which was bound for overseas service. On September 29, 1918 the ship came under enemy fire. In October, 1918 he qualified by examination as Yeoman 3rd Class. He was awarded the Victory Medal and Transport Clasp before being released from active duty in March 1919 at the Naval Station in New Orleans. He was honorably discharged from the Naval Reserve on September 30, 1921. After his naval service, Murray resumed his university studies in New York, becoming a Certified Public Accountant. He and his wife Betty lived in Manhattan and later in Florida. They had no children. Murray was a quiet, gentle man on whom his parents and seven siblings depended for sound and thoughtful advice. He visited them often in Providence, not only to assist with financial matters but also to provide them with emotional support. Intelligent and level-headed, he was beloved by his family for his kindness and steadiness, and respected by his business colleagues for his clear insight and common sense. Murray Shindler died on October 21, 1982, mourned and missed by those who had been privileged to know him. He is buried with the other members of his family in the Lincoln Park Hebrew Cemetery in Warwick, Rhode Island.
