Shirley Seville Fleshin Greenwald was born May 17, 1927, in Morristown, New Jersey, to Harry Fleshin and Sonia Caplan Fleshin. The family later moved to Cleveland, Ohio, where she attended the Mount Sinai School of Nursing and became a Registered Nurse. In 1953, her parents moved to Dallas, and in 1961, she accepted a commission as a First Lieutenant in the US Army Nurse Corps. During the next seven years, she was stationed in San Antonio, Verdunn, France, and Fort Walters, Texas. Upon leaving the service at the rank of Captain, she earned a Bachelors of Science in Nursing from the Univeristy of Texas at Austin. In 1970, she joined the Dallas County Health Department and becane the Director of Nursing in 1980, until her retirement in 1987, when she married Roland Greenwald. She was preceded in death by her loving parents and her brother, S. Robert Fleshin. She is survived by her husband, Roland; her nephew, Rick Fleshin, and his wife, Diane; and great-nephew, Samuel Robert Fleshin, Terri Fleshin Dolezal, niece. In addition she is survived by many cousins and friends. She is a life member of the University of Texas, School of Nursing Alumni Assoc., Texas EXes, Women in Military Service, Jewish War Veterans, the Army Nurse Corps Assoc., and the National Museum of American Jewish Military History. In addition to world travel, she was a passionate lover of the arts and the Opera.
