words taken from a written history report from the winter of 1990
"...Lucky me, my number was picked in January of 1941. I reeived my "greetings" to report on March 10, 1941, this was to be a one year stint which turned out to be three months short of 5 years.. An interesting statistic I lataer learned: out of a total of 60 draftees browght into Hdq. Battery, 32 were college graduates. Out of about 62 National Guardsmen, there were not more than 20 or 25 who had greaduated highschool, we received $21.00 a month out of which $2.90 was taken out for laundry...I took the train to Boston, got a waiver, had a blood test and Ad and I were married in the old Hotel Touraine in Boston, honeymooned in New York. One of the highlights of our trip was seeing and hearing the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra with Helen O'Connell and Ray Ederle... Ad traveled with me while on stateside but in Jearly July I was on the move again, Ad went back to Boston and we did not realized that it would be more than a year before we saw each other again. This was the tough part and I shet a few tears when the train moved out of the station and she waved from the window...Back to camp and reality...
