Bernard Chaney was born in Brooklyn, NY and grew up in Hoboken, NJ. Bernie’s parents opened a grocery store. Bernie spent 26 years in Hoboken then graduated New York University with a degree in Accounting. He was inducted into the U.S. Army October 13, 1942 and served for over three years in Texas as a Financial Technical Clerk. During that time, he married Charlotte Ellner, a 1st Lt. in the Army Nurse Corp., on August 20, 1944. Bernie was discharged in January 1946. Bernie and Charlotte moved to Brooklyn, NY and he opened a grocery store and joined the Jewish War Veterans of the USA. In 1953, Bernie and Charlotte moved to Miami Florida and joined Post 682 where Bernie became Post Commander in 1968. In 1972, Bernie opened a warehouse for builder’s hardware where he stayed in business until 1989 when he retired. The couple moved to a condominium in Hollywood, FL where Bernie was on the Board of Directors until he died in 2005. Bernie was also a member of the Masons and Knights of Pythias. He spread his good humor and knowledge for the past 60 plus years. His sense of devotion was admirable and his willingness to always offer a helping hand was well known.
