Alvin Rose was a patriot, temple supporter, and most of all, had a tremendous love for his wife, four daughters and eleven grandchildren. Al was well known for his passion, generosity and zest for life.
Immediately upon graduating from high school, Al volunteered for the US Marine Corps to join the WWII effort. He graduated first in his radio class and was made a Corporal in the 1st Marine Division. Al served honorably as a forward observer, participating in some of the most difficult fighting in the Pacific front. Al has been honored with eleven medals and unit citations for his service, including the Navy and Marine Corps Presidential Unit Citation awarded to units for "extraordinary heroism in action" and "displaying such gallantry, determination and esprit de corps in accomplishing its mission under extremely difficult and hazardous conditions so as to set it apart from and above other units participating in the same campaign".
Al was a member of the Jewish War Veterans Post 778,recently re-named in his memory to Alvin Rose South Dade Post 778, serving as post commander twice. He was elected state commander of the Jewish War Veterans Department of Florida. Al served on the board of the National Museum of American Jewish Military History in Washington, D.C. and as a National Executive Committeeman. Al was also an active supporter of Israel and ensured all his children and grandchildren studied or visited there.
