Louis came to the U.S. from Belarus at age 4 and grew up in New York City with his parents and two sisters. He earned an Economics degree from NYU and worked in the building trades until enlisting in the Navy in 1942. Soon after the war he and Julia Rubin met on a blind date and married 3 months later. They were married for 55 years. They settled in Springfield, Massachusetts, where Louis owned two automotive supply businesses. There they had three children. At age 50 he went back to school for a master's degree and began teaching industrial arts. After retirement he and Julia traveled extensively including a trip to Alaska and the North Pacific, where he had served during WWII. Louis enjoyed many activities with his family including camping, traveling, and building a summer home in the Berkshires. He is remembered by his wife and children, Nancy White, Allen Bale, and Roberta Frye as a serene, benevolent man who barely uttered a harsh word.
